TEHRAN, Jul. 09 (Press Shia Agency) – Finland’s University of Tempere Rector Liisa Laakso met and talked with chancellors of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU).
The meetings took place in Tehran and aimed at development of cooperation in scientific arenas between the Finnish and Iranian sides.
Rector Liisa Laakso noted that University of Tempere was a credible university in Finland which hosted 15,000 students and ranked 501-600 in the QS World University Rankings.
She pointed to implementation of joint projects between Tempere and TUMS saying “given the presence of both sides in ‘Erasmus Plus’ as the new EU program for education, training, youth and sport, we are eager to bolster ties with the Iranian university.
Ali Jafarian, Chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), described TUMS as one of the oldest and most distinguished medical universities of Iran stressing that over 12,000 students were studying in 11 subsidiaries of the scientific institution.
“A total of 16 training hospital of TUMS are offering services to nearly three million patients in southern areas of Tehran,” noted the official adding that professors there produced 5,000 articles annually thanks to 95 research centers of the university.
Jafarian highlighted that TUMS enjoyed a ranking of 201-250 in the QS World University Rankings.
The significant rise in activities of the Iranian university over the past six years have led to expansion of joint collaborations with scientific centers and universities in various fields like hosting foreign students, exchange of professors and students as well as implementation of joint research programs.
TUMS chancellor said grounds were ready for interaction with international scientific centers, European ones in particular, adding “we hold ten years of experience in cooperation with Finnish universities.”
He further voiced willingness to bolster ties with University of Tempere within framework of the Erasmus program.
The two sides, while calling for further scientific cooperation, agreed on joining hands in areas like global health, medical information and regenerative medicine.
Liisa Laakso also made a visit to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU) and met with its chancellor Ali Asghar Peyvandi.
Dr. Payvandi welcomed his Finnish counterpart and emphasized the need for reinvigoration of international cooperation between universities.
At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) be inked for exchange of professors and students as well as transfer of knowledge and technology in line with elevation of educational and research capabilities.
Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences is one of the three medical universities in Tehran, the capital of Iran. It began in 1961 with the establishment of the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.
