TEHRAN (Press Shia) – There is definitely no military solution to the crisis that has plagued Syria since 2011, Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran’s Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati underscored.

Efforts should be focused on establishing sustainable peace in Syria and preserving its territorial integrity, Velayati said Wednesday in a meeting in Tehran with former Swedish prime minister, Carl Bildt.

Dismissing any military approach for resolving the crisis in Syria, Velayati emphasized that the Arab country’s future is very important for global peace and stability, because around 80 countries, including Europeans, are engaged in the war in Syria.

However, the Iranian official noted, only the Syrian people, government and groups should decide their own fate without any foreign interference.

For his part, the Swedish politician hailed Iran’s remarkable role in the settlement of regional conflicts, particularly in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

Some 470,000 Syrians have been killed throughout the five years of bloodshed, 4.8 million have fled the country, and 6.6 million have become internally displaced by the violence.
