BAGHDAD (Press Shia Agency) – Former Iraqi National Security Advisor Muafaq al-Rabiei revealed new facts about execution of Iraq’s dictator, Saddam Hussein.
The execution of Saddam Hussein took place on Saturday, 30 December, 2006. Saddam was sentenced to death by hanging, after being convicted of crimes against humanity by the Iraqi Special Tribunal for the murder of 148 Iraqi Shiites in the town of Dujail in 1982.
The following is the full text of interview with Al-Rabiei about execution of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein:
Press Shia Agency: Why the al-Mahdi Army executed Saddam, early morning without having President Jalal Talebani’s approval? Then, what made you do that in a hurry?
Al-Rabiei: No. The al-Mahdi Army did not execute Saddam. We did not need Talebani’s approval, however, Talibani was not a person to sign the decree for execution of a man because he had his own special promise on the issue. Meantime, I should say that Saddam execution did not happen on Eid al-Adha. He was not executed on the feast day, I will explain it to you; Eid al-Adha starts after sunrise when Hajj pilgrims begin sacrificing ceremony and stoning of the devil (Rami al-Jamarat). All right? One cannot perform the Hajj rituals including sacrificing and Rami-al-Jamarat before sunrise. Saddam was executed and I myself executed him before the sunrise on the eve of Eid al-Adha. Therefore, from religious point of view, Saddam was not executed on the day of Eid al-Adha.
Press Shia Agency: How was Saddam in last moments before the execution?
Al-Rabiei: I should say when Imam (late founder of the Islamic Republi, Imam Khomeini) described Saddam as ‘Infidel Yazid’ I was opposed to the idea in my heart; I asked myself, how do you know that? Who has told you that he is an infidel? He could be faithful in his heart. It became evident for me on the day of execution that Saddam is really an infidel; the reason for my idea is that he never invoked God during his execution. Any individual knows well that when the rope is around his neck he will die in minutes; in this situation, people sometimes ask pardon from God and say ‘Oh, Lord, I am coming to you, pardon me’ or say ‘There is no god but Allah’ and that ‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’.
However, Saddam never invoked God until going on the execution platform. We asked him to invoke God and say ‘There is no god but Allah’ and that ‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ and say ‘I testify Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’. He did not pay attention to our recommendations and did not repeated the statement. We reminded him to say so. I should say Imam’s remarks and speeches was quite clear about his. Saddam was an ‘Infidel Yazid’.
