TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi warned the US against any further bloodshed in war-hit Syria and said the Arab country’s crisis can be resolved only through diplomatic channels.
In a statement released on Friday in response to recent remarks by his US counterpart John Kirby, Qassemi said nearly 6 years of war, killings of innocent people, and destruction of Syria’s infrastructure, have proved the futility of using force to resolve the Arab country’s crisis.
The Iranian spokesman further advised all warring parties in Syria as well as trans-regional countries, including the US, to put political efforts and peaceful means high on their agenda in order to resolve the Syrian crisis.
Kirby said on Thursday that the US government is continuing internal deliberations about non-diplomatic options to address the war in Syria.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
