TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Iranian Ambassador to Turkey Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian highlighted the importance of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, saying that it can promote relations between Muslim nations.

Speaking in a meeting with the head of the Erbakan Foundation, Fatih Erbakan, in Ankara on Thursday, Taherian expressed deep concern over the spread of extremist currents in the Middle East and the world and said in order to stop extremism, Muslim countries should boost their cooperation.

He added that paying more attention to the potentials of the D-8 organization can effectively help promote relations among its Muslim member states and the Muslim world in general.

Erbakan, for his part, stressed the need to develop Tehran-Ankara relations in all areas and said the expansion of political, cultural and economic ties between the two neighboring countries was among the most strategic concerns of the late Necmettin Erbakan.

The D-8 and Erbakan Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 26 June 2016 in Istanbul to develop cooperation in various social, cultural, sport, academic and scientific spheres.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation is an organization for the development of cooperation among Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

The objectives of the D-8 are to improve member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at international level, and improve standards of living.
