WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Shia Agency) – Shiite Muslims from the US state of Maryland and suburbs of the District of Columbia attended a religious ceremony on Wednesday night at the Islamic Education Center in Potomac, Maryland, to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).
Mourners converged on the Islamic center on Ashura to pay tribute to Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Ashura, the 10th day of the lunar month of Muharram, marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein and his companions fourteen centuries ago.
On Ashura, millions of Shiites all over the globe, dressed in black, take to the streets and mosques, to mourn the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussein in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
The annual mourning commemoration is held in different regions of the world with various traditional rituals.
