TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s commitment to supporting all Iraqi resistance groups, including the Nujaba Movement.
Heading a delegation, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi paid a visit to the central base of the Nujaba Movement, a major Shiite resistance group, located in Iraq’s northern province of Salahuddin.
Hailing Nujaba for its significant role in the victories Iraq has achieved against the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, Ayatollah Shahroudi underscored that Iran will keep supporting the Iraqi movement and all other resistance groups.
Congratulating Iraq on the recent successful military operation to recapture the northern city of Tal Agar form Daesh militants, the Iranian cleric said the Nujaba Movement has played a leading role in that and other victories.
In recent weeks, the Iraqi military forces have made significant progress in their fight against Daesh terrorists by liberating the city of Tal Afar.
Daesh militants made swift advances in northern and western Iraq in summer 2014, after capturing territories in Syria.
However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the popular forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, blunted the edge of Daesh offensive and later forced the Takfiri terrorists to withdraw from much of the areas they had occupied.
