TEHRAN, Oct. 15 (Press Shia) – Iran’s permanent envoy to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) while stressing the universality of the Chemical Weapon Convention, called on all non-parties to join the CWC as soon as possible and without any preconditions.
Alireza Jahangiri, the Permanent Representative of Iran to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), made the remark in the 83rd session of the Executive Council that was held on Oct. 11-14 in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Jahangiri, as the deputy chairman of the Council, stressed the significance of a complete destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles, and called on countries with chemical weapons to comply with their commitments under the CWC.
He welcomed the progress made on Syria’s chemical weapons, and urged against politicization of Syria’s case considering the cooperation of Syrian government with the OPCW.
Jahangiri deemed the use of chemical weapons by terrorist groups a threat to international peace and security, and called on all state parties to avoid providing terrorists with military and financial support.
The Iranian envoy further highlighted international cooperation on technological transfer of chemical activities for peaceful purposes, and expressed concern for the obstacles created in this regard, calling for a full implementation of the article XI of the Convention.
