TEHRAN, Sep. 18 (Press Shia Agency) – Iran is ready to develop cooperation with the organisation to resolve regional issues, said President Rouhani in a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres on Monday in New York.
In the meeting held on the sidelines of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Rouhani said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) can be a good model for peace and stability in the region and the world and the responsibility of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Secretary-General is supporting the JCPOA, particularly against those who violate their commitments.
Congratulating Secretary-General António Guterres’ appointment, Rouhani added “the Islamic Republic of Iran is always ready to support UN in advancing its heavy demands.”
He also called on the secretary-general to do his utmost to implement the World Against Violence and Extremism resolution, adding, “Iran has carried out valuable actions against terrorism in the region. To settle the issues of the region, one must resort to political solutions and we are negotiating with friend countries such as Turkey and Russia in Astana”.
Calling on everyone, including the UN to firmly support the constitution and territorial integrity of Iraq, he said, “the talk of a referendum in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region and any move to make changes to borders and geographies of the countries of the region is very dangerous”.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations also expressed happiness over meeting with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and said, “truth is that the Islamic Republic of Iran has lived up to its commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).”
“JCPOA is a very important step in strengthening peace and I believe that everybody must protect it,” he continued.
He also went on to refer to the current situation in Syria and Yemen, adding: “We are ready to cooperate with Iran on peace and security in the region”.
“We believe that solving the current problems in Syria and Iraq depends on pursuing political solutions and negotiating by all sides, as is now the case with the cooperation of Iran, Russia and Turkey in Astana and of the United Nations in Geneva ” said UN Secretary General, referring to referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan, while expressing strong support of the constitution and territorial integrity of Iraq.
He added, “any break-up in Iraq or Syria does not benefit regional stability and we are ready to work with Iran to strengthen the foundations of peace and security in the region”.
