Zarif: US Policy on Iran Deal Signifies Futility of Talks with Washington

TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zaif once again deplored Washington’s stance on July 2015 deal between Tehran and world powers over the country’s nuclear program.

Speaking at a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono on the sidelines of the annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday, Zarif said US President Donald Trump’s stance on the deal (known as the Joint Comprehensive Plans of Action or JCPOA) between Iran and six world powers (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) prove that any talks with Washington will bear no fruits.

“The stance of the current US administration on the JCPOA sends this message to the world that any negotiations with the US will be fruitless,” Zarif reiterated.

During his speech at the General Assembly on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said Iran deal was an “embarrassment” to the United States.

Also at the meeting, Zarif pointed to the crisis in the Korean Peninsula and said Iran is opposed to any production, test and development of nuclear weapons.

He then urged prudence by Japan and other regional and world countries to prevent a big crisis in the region.

The Japanese foreign minister, for his part, threw his country’s weight behind the JCPOA and said he has informed many countries about the deal’s significance.
