TEHRAN (Press Shia) – An Iranian lawmaker commended French President Emmanuel Macron for stressing the need to protect the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
Macron’s comments at the UN General Assembly about the importance of saving the JCPOA were remarkable and significant, chairman of Iran-France parliamentary friendship group Kazem Jalali said on Monday.
He made the remarks in a meeting with Director General of the International Diplomatic Academy of France Michel Duclos, held in Tehran.
Highlighting Iran’s commitment to the nuclear accord, the Iranian lawmaker called on the other parties to honor the deal as well.
Jalali also slammed the US president’s UN speech against Iran as illogical and irrational, warning that withdrawal from the agreement would draw a proportional reaction from Tehran.
The visiting French figure, for his part, described the JCPOA as a good deal that has raised the level of cooperation between Iran and Europe.
The French president and the European Union share views on safeguarding the JCPOA, Duclos added.
Iran and the Group 5+1 signed the JCPOA in July 2015. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
Earlier this month, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei lambasted the US for violating the nuclear accord, warning that any “wrong move” concerning the deal would draw reaction from Iran.
