BAGHDAD (Press Shia) – A Lebanese political activist hailed Iran for its pioneering role in promoting unity in the Muslim world.

In an interview with the Press Shia News Agency in Baghdad, Sheikh Ahmad al-Qattan, head of a political group from Lebanon, praised Iran for spearheading and steering efforts at Islamic unity.

He also paid tribute to late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini for acting on the basis of enhancing unity of the Islamic community, saying Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei is now following the same path.

Qattan then urged Arab and Islamic countries to try to narrow the gap between Muslims instead of creating division.

The Lebanese cleric made the comments on the sidelines of the 9th session of the Islamic Awakening Supreme Council in the Iraqi capital.

Some 50 clerics, scholars and intellectuals from 22 Muslim nations have attended the two-day conference.
