TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – A court in the Afghan capital of Kabul sentenced seven bodyguards for the country’s vice president, General Abdul Rashid Dostum, to eight years in prison for abducting and raping a political rival.

Ahmad Ishchi, a former governor of Mr. Dostum’s home province of Jowzjan, claimed in December 2016 that he had been abducted by the vice president and his bodyguards from a sports event in November, and then raped with a gun.

In comments on Saturday, Ishchi said Kabul city’s PD2 primary court on Wednesday sentenced the guards to eight years behind bars.

The controversial case has forced Dostum to go into de facto exile in Turkey. He tried to return once, but his plane was forced to turn around. General Dostum has refused to answer to questions from the country’s attorney general.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had said that he would take the allegations against General Dostum seriously and that the case would be handled fairly within the judicial system to show that no one is above the law.
