TEHRAN (Press Shia) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry said Tehran has expressed its reservations about documents issued in recent emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers, which may be interpreted as recognition of the Zionist regime.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran supports the “inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.”
However, he said, Iran’s support for the two documents adopted in Istanbul, including the final communique of the OIC summit and the declaration by foreign ministers, does not mean that Tehran recognizes “the occupying and fake regime of Israel”.
The spokesman further said Iran’s reservations about its non-recognition of the Israeli entity was announced during the conference and officially submitted to the secretariat of the summit in a written form.
On Wednesday, the OIC held an emergency summit in Istanbul to coordinate a response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize al-Quds as the “capital” of the Israeli regime. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also attended the event.
In its final communiqué, the OIC declared that it would recognize “East Jerusalem (al-Quds) as the capital of the State of Palestine and invite all countries to recognize the State of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital.”
The main summit was preceded by a meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers, during which the participants adopted a declaration dubbed “Freedom for al-Quds.”
The OIC rejected and condemned “in the strongest terms the unilateral decision by the president of the United States of America in recognizing Jerusalem (al-Quds) as the so-called capital of Israel, the occupying Power.”
The Muslim body reaffirmed its continued commitment to a so-called two-state solution for ending the years-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Some speakers, however, said the US was no longer deemed reliable to mediate any peace deal.
OIC members also said they would hold the US responsible for the consequences of the decision. The communiqué also denounced Israel’s actions and policies against the people of Palestine as “colonial” and “racist.”
