TEHRAN (Press Shia) – An Israeli military court has extended the detention of a Palestinian teen who has become a national hero after she was filmed kicking and slapping Israeli soldiers, a report said.
Ahed Tamimi, a 17-year-old firebrand from the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh, was arrested last week by Israeli troops and faces charges of attacking soldiers. An Israeli military court on Monday extended Tamimi's detention, along with those of her mother and cousin, for four days for questioning, AP reported.
Tamimi was filmed earlier this month outside her family home shouting, pushing, kicking and slapping Israeli soldiers.
Palestinians are celebrating her as an icon of a new generation of resistance to Israeli occupation.
An Israeli columnist, reportedly notorious for his radicalism, has now called for the punishment of the duo away from the public eye, in what Palestinian and other media suggest is a tacit encouragement of sexual abuse and even rape.
“We should exact a price at some other opportunity, in the dark, without witnesses and cameras,” Ben Caspit wrote. “The Tamimi family has to learn, the hard way, that such systematic provocations” come at a great cost.
