TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Secretary general of Iraq’s al-Nujaba Movement, a major Shiite resistance group, condemned the US president’s move to recognize al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of Israel, voicing his organization’s readiness to defend the Palestinian city.
In a meeting with Palestine’s ambassador to Baghdad, Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi said members of al-Nujaba Movement are fully prepared to defend the holy city of al-Quds.
Condemning US President Donald Trump’s decision to declare al-Quds capital of Israel, Sheikh al-Kaabi denounced the US plan to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to al-Quds as a provocative measure aimed at giving credibility to the Zionist regime.
The Iraqi figure also stressed the need for Muslim unity against the US and Israel.
Trump declared on December 6 that his administration would begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the city of Quds. The controversial decision drew widespread international condemnation and sparked protests across Palestine.
Palestinian leaders had previously warned the move would threaten a two-state solution.
Last week, 128 UN members defied US president and voted in favor of a resolution calling for the US to withdraw its decision to recognize al-Quds as the capital of Israel.
Israel has occupied East Quds since the 1967 Middle East war. It annexed the area in 1980 and sees it as its exclusive domain. Under international law, the area is considered to be occupied territory.
