TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Speaker of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly Ismail Kahraman questioned the United Nation’s ability to ensure world peace, bemoaning the fact that only five nations in the UN Security Council make decisions about international issues.
In a meeting with Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran on Monday, Kahraman said the current UN structure is inappropriate for establishing world peace.
When a decision is mooted in the UNSC meeting, any of the five permanent members could veto it, the Turkish speaker added.
He further slammed US decisions on terrorism and its policy of supporting a terrorist group to battle against another one.
Kahraman also hailed the significant role that Iran and Turkey play in peacemaking efforts, saying outsiders have failed to upset Tehran-Ankara relations.
For his part, Larijani stressed the need for close cooperation between Iran and Turkey on regional issues, saying the US is seeking to foment tensions in the region.
On economic ties with Turkey, the Iranian speaker called for expansion of the baking ties to pave the way for stronger bilateral trade.
The Turkish speaker is in Tehran for the 13th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUIC).
Earlier on Monday, Larijani held talks with the parliament speakers of Pakistan, Syria, Oman and Senegal.
