TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Ivanovna Matviyenko highlighted the importance that her country attaches to collaboration with Iran in the fight against terrorism.
“We attach great value to intensive cooperation with Iran in the fight against terrorism, and intend to expand these ties,” Matviyenko said at a joint press conference with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran on Sunday.
Hailing the good atmosphere for cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in light of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Matviyenko said Iran and Russia’s stances on many international issues are very similar or quite identical.
The JCPOA, a lasting nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), came into force in January.
For his part, the Iranian speaker expressed satisfaction with the “useful and constructive” talks with the visiting Russian speaker, saying the negotiations focused on closer parliamentary ties, cooperation in the railroad and energy industries, as well as interaction between some Iranian and Russian provinces.
He also highlighted the impact of Matviyenko’s visit on the political, trade and security relations between the two countries.
The speaker of Russia's upper house of parliament is in Iran for an official visit to discuss ways to boost bilateral relations.
The Federation Council is the upper house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, or the Russian parliament. Each of the 85 federal subjects of Russia -consisting of 22 republics- is represented by two senators in the Federation Council.
Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting the Syrian government against foreign-backed militancy.
