TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the “strategic cooperation” between Tehran and Moscow in the fight against terrorism, saying such collaboration will remain in place until elimination of terrorists in the region.
“There is strategic cooperation between Iran and Russia in the fight against terrorism, and these ties will continue until defeat of terrorism in the region,” President Rouhani said at a meeting with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Ivanovna Matviyenko, held in Tehran on Monday.
Highlighting the threat of terrorist groups to the whole world, President Rouhani stressed the need for Iran and Russia’s help for Syria to help the Arab country fight off terrorism and achieve stability.
He also pointed to abundant opportunities for collaboration between Tehran and Moscow in the nuclear industry, cultural affairs, academic research and other fields.
For her part, the visiting Russian speaker voiced her country’s willingness to broaden ties with Iran in all fields, stressing the need for continued mutual cooperation in countering terrorism.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
In the meantime, Iran and Russia have remained close allies of Syria and support its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
