TEHRAN (Press Shia) – A Syrian deputy foreign minister denied Western allegations of chemical weapons use by Damascus in the fight against terrorists, slamming it as a US ploy to overshadow the Syrian government’s achievements and military gains.

“The enemies of Syria have ramped up allegations of chemical weapons use by Damascus in the wake of the Syrian army’s achievements and victories,” Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said in an interview with Press Shia.

Such accusations are made while Washington “is supporting terrorism not only in Syria but around the world,” he added, branding the US as the “enemy of democracy and nations.”

“The United States of America has currently allied itself with the terrorists, while Syria is allied with its friends, including Russians, and with the other powers and countries that are fighting together against terrorism,” Mekdad added.

“All such American lies and fabricated reports on the use of chemical weapons in Syria (by Damascus) are meant to support its tools, known as the White Helmets, and the Daesh (ISIL) and al-Nusra Front terrorist groups,” the Syrian diplomat argued.

He went on to say that Washington levels such accusations to carry out its Middle East policies after failing to achieve any of its objectives in Syria.

In comments last week, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had denounced allegations of chemical attacks by his government as part of Western lies, warning of the West’s ploys to revive terrorism in Syria under the guise of humanitarian initiatives.

Assad had also said the Western media and political campaign against Syria under humanitarian titles is aimed primarily at “reviving terrorism and terrorists after the heavy blows they suffered.”
