TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, said Iran and Russia are resolved to promote the bilateral ties in diverse areas.
Speaking at a meeting with a visiting delegation from the Valdai Discussion Club in Tehran on Sunday, Velayati hailed the age-old relations between Tehran and Moscow and said, “We have a long history of negotiations with our Russian friends.”
“Iran and Russia have developed their relationship in various areas and the (growing) trend will continue with the serious determination of high-ranking officials of the two countries,” he added.
Andrey Bystritskiy, the chairman of the Valdai Discussion Club, for his part, referred to mutual trust and understanding as keys in the ties between the two countries.
He also referred to his “good discussions” in his earlier meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and expressed the hope that the talks with Velayati would have a major impact on Tehran-Moscow relations.
The Valdai Discussion Club is a Moscow-based think tank established in 2004. It is named after Lake Valdai, which is located close to Veliky Novgorod, where the Club’s first meeting took place.
Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years and have ramped up efforts to boost defense cooperation, trade ties, and cultural interaction.
They have close cooperation on international issues, including the Syrian crisis. They both support the Syrian government against foreign-backed militancy.
