TEHRAN, Nov. 28 (Press Shia) – Iran’s FM Zarif said Fidel Castro’s death marked a tragedy for liberation movements especially in Latin America.
Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks during a ceremony to commemorate the deceased leader of the Cuban Revolution held in Tehran at the residence of the Cuban ambassador to Iran.
Zarif also touched upon Iran-Cuba ties saying “strong and friendly relations have always existed and will continue between the two countries.”
“On behalf of the Iranian nation, I extend my deep condolences to the people and government of Cuba as well as Castro’s family,” noted Iran’s FM adding that the memory of Fidel Castro, as a leader of liberation, will always persist.
“During the recent trip of Iran’s President Rouhani to Cuba, we had the opportunity to meet with Commander Fidel,” recalled Zarif commenting “a concern for Cuba and the Third World was still felt in his words as he emphasized the need for solidarity of developing countries as a means of dealing with arrogance and trying to get rid of dominant.”
Also at the ceremony, Cuban Ambassador to Tehran Vladimir Andres Gonzalez Quesada referred to characteristics of Fidel Castro expressing hope that bilateral relations will be expanded between the two countries given that both sides hold strong determination in this regard.
He further appreciated Iranian authorities for their sympathy with the Cuban nation and government over demise of their revolutionary leader.
Mohammad Javad Zarif also put his signature on a memorial book designed in memory of Cuba’s Castro at the residence of the Cuban ambassador to Tehran and praised the unique role of ‘Commander Fidel’ in the contemporary history of Latin America.
