TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi offered his congratulations to the Iraqi people and government over the successful holding of the parliamentary elections and said it strengthened the Arab country’s victories against terrorism.

In a statement released on Monday, Qassemi said through participating in the elections, the Iraqis once again tried to cement their victories and achievements in the fight against terrorism with a resolute will.

The Iraqi people demonstrated that they can play a key role in consolidating the stability, tranquility and prosperity of their country as well as regional security under the leadership of religious scholars and through national unity, he said.

The spokesman also added the Islamic Republic attaches great significance to efforts to strengthen political partnership and democracy in Iraq.

On Saturday, Iraqis voted in the first parliamentary election since the country declared victory over the Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group at the end of 2017.

More than 90% of the votes have been counted in 10 of Iraq's 18 provinces, and preliminary official results show the coalition led by Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's bloc is ahead, followed by the alliance led by Hadi al-Amiri, who commanded Shiite popular forces during the fighting against Daesh.
