TEHRAN, Dec. 02 (Press Shia Agency) – Iran’s FM spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Kenyan ambassador was invited Thu. to the Foreign Ministry where he promised to make quick investigation into the Iranian detainees’ case in Kenya.
Abdolhossein Safaei and Seyed Nasrollah Ebrahimi, two Iranian attorneys and university professors, who had travelled to Nairobi on behalf of the families of two Iranians prisoners in Kenya in order to follow up on their cases and give legal advice to them, were questioned by the Kenyan police on Thursday upon their return from the prison. The two were released as soon as the misunderstanding was cleared, but ‘certain third parties’ probed into the case which led to the arrest of these two attorneys by the Kenyan police on the same day.
Following the incident, the Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Friday that Kenya’s ambassador was invited to the Foreign Ministry on Thursday afternoon to receive Iran’s protest against the biased intervention of the ‘third party’ in an otherwise closed case with an aim to tarnish the good relations between Iran and Kenya. The ambassador was also requested to follow up on the case in earnest as the Iranian ministry stressed the immediate release of the two Iranian nationals.
“The Kenyan ambassador has vowed to follow up on the case as soon as possible and report back the results of his investigations to Iranian Foreign Ministry,” Ghasemi said.
Ghasemi further expressed hope that given the known identities of the two lawyers, the investigation process would not be affected by false media hype spread by those having ill-intent toward the good relations between Iran and Kenya.
He also called on Kenyan government and Judiciary to make serious efforts and responsible cooperation toward the immediate release of the two Iranian nationals.
