TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani praised the Syrian nation’s resistance against foreign-backed terrorist groups and reiterated the Islamic Republic’s continued support for the war-stricken country.

“The Syrian nation’s resistance has had a good result,” Larijani said during a meeting with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Tehran on Tuesday.

“Currently, Syria has conditions that are improving day by day,” the Iranian parliament speaker added.

Mekdad, for his part, expressed his gratitude for Tehran’s measures to support Damascus and said if it had not been for Iran, Syria should not have been able to defeat terrorists in the Arab country.

“The Islamic Republic’s firm stance against the terrorists is commendable and you should know that the bloods that have been shed in Syria will never be in vain,” he added.

The remarks came as diplomatic talks to resolve the protracted crisis in Syria has recently yielded good results.

Representatives from Iran, Russia, and Turkey met in Geneva last week to discuss establishing the committee tasked with drafting Syria's new constitution.

In April, the presidents of the three countries –the guarantor states of de-escalation zones in Syria– held a meeting in Ankara to discuss ways for peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis.

Since January 2017, Kazakhstan’s capital has hosted several rounds of peace talks that led to an agreement on de-escalation zones across Syria.

The talks in Astana have been going on in tandem with UN-brokered Geneva talks.

According to reports, the conflict that broke out in Syria in 2011 has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
