TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Iran’s ambassador to the Netherlands scorned the US move to brand the International Court of Justice’s ruling as a “defeat for Iran” and at the same time to withdraw from the Treaty of Amity.

In a tweet on Thursday, Alireza Jahangiri questioned the US paradoxical behavior in regard to the ICJ’s ruling in favor of Iran.

“Why some Americans are angry about the Court’s order & immediately announce termination of the longstanding Treaty between the two countries if it is a ‘narrow decision’ & ‘a defeat for Iran’,” the Iranian ambassador wrote.

Stressing that the real intent behind US withdrawal from the Teary of Amity is crystal clear, he added, “…, it is written all over your face.”

In a provisional verdict on Wednesday, the ICJ ruled that the US government should lift all bans on the free export of humanitarian goods like food and medicine to Iran which have been re-imposed after Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Judges at the ICJ, the highest United Nations court, ruled in favor of Iran in a lawsuit against the US for breaching the 1955 Treaty of Amity by re-imposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic after pulling out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Thereafter, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the US withdrawal from the 1955 Treaty of Amity with Iran, a document that he said should have been terminated “decades ago.”

Pompeo had already described the ICJ ruling as a “defeat for Iran” because the court “rightly rejected all of Iran’s baseless requests” including an effort to “secure broad measures to interfere with US sanctions.”
