TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the main purpose of the sanctions imposed by the angry US government against Iran is to create rift between the Iranian nation and government, highlighting efforts to foil that plot.

In a video message released on Tuesday, Zarif slammed the new sanctions against Iran as a sign of the US government’s frustration.

“The US measures are taken with fury, and it is the Islamic Republic of Iran government’s duty to not allow such hostile measures, which are against people and aimed at dividing them from each other and from the administration, to harm the people,” Zarif underlined, saying the Iranian government is vigorously trying to thwart the US plots, including through diplomatic measures.

He further stressed that the administration is duty-bound to ensure the welfare of the Iranian people and minimize the impact of sanctions, with or without the other countries.

The Iranian minister also pointed to the US government’s isolation in the international community and its anger at the world consensus against its unilateral policies, saying only the Zionist regime of Israel and a few small countries are abiding by Washington’s policies.

“I am confident that bad days are awaiting the US government,” Zarif underlined, saying Washington’s policies have been in favor of a small group of its supporters rather than its own people.

“The US government is rather trying to cover up the Saudi regime and the Israeli regime’s crimes instead of pursuing a policy in favor of its national interests,” he added.

“I am confident that Mr. Trump’s administration will come to the conclusion after a while that these policies (anti-Iran sanctions) won’t affect the great Iranian nation’s resolve and the Americans will have to shift their policy,” Zarif added.

The new round of US sanctions against Iran came into force on November 4.

US President Donald Trump’s administration has announced plans to drive Iran’s oil exports down to zero.
