TEHRAN (Press Shia Agency) – Turkey’s first domestically-made cruise missile capable of destroying concrete bunkers and fortifications, successfully completed its test firing, Science and Industry Minister Mustafa Varank announced.
“The first tests of the first Turkish SOM-B2 cruise missiles, which can be used against concrete fortifications, have been successfully carried out,” Mustafa Varank wrote on Twitter late Thursday, Sputnik reported.
The missile was developed by TUBITAK Defense Industries Research and Development Institute under the guidance of the defense industry administration, the minister added.
The SOM is a Turkish long-range cruise missile, developed by the TUBITAK Defense Industries Research and Development Institute of the Defence Industry of the Turkish Council for Scientific and Technical Research. It was first revealed during the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Air Force at the military base in Izmir on 4 June 2011. It is Turkey’s first weapon to be capable of destroying long-range targets; it is capable of eliminating objects within a 200 kilometre-radius.
