TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali said the country should use experiences gained during the Sacred Defense era (Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s) to counter the current economic war waged by the US against the Islamic Republic.
“Governing the country under the special circumstances of the Sacred Defense era with its many complexities is one of the best experiences of this era that needs to be updated and used effectively during the (current) economic war,” Brigadier General Jalali told the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
He added that in the year 1986, the national income was about five to seven billion dollars, with which the war was managed and also the basic commodities of the people were provided.
“One of the requirements of the economic civil defense in today’s situation is to develop a practical plan of the resistance economy… so that everyone knows how and in what areas they should defend,” he went on to say.
The remarks came against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since last year after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump has been trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.
Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans and selling crude oil.
Last week, Iranian Armed Forces staged nationwide military parades to mark the Sacred Defense Week.
In Iran, the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war is known as the Sacred Defense, and the Sacred Defense Week is held on the anniversary of the beginning of the war.
