TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Iranian Ambassador to France Bahram Qassemi said raising the issue of renegotiating the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is aimed at covering up the European Union’s failure to meet its obligations under the accord.
“There is no wise politician familiar with the issues surrounding the JCPOA who doubts that this agreement is the only possible solution,” Qassemi said on his Twitter account.
Raising the issue of renegotiation for any reason is merely an excuse to justify the European parties’ inability to meet their commitments, the diplomat added.
In a statement released on Tuesday, France, Britain and Germany announced their decision to trigger the dispute mechanism in the JCPOA.
In comments on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the move by France, Britain and Germany is legally baseless and politically wrong.
In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA.
Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the JCPOA after the US withdrawal, but the three EU parties to the deal have failed to ensure Iran’s economic interests.
The EU’s inaction forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments to the nuclear deal.
Iran maintains that the new measures are not designed to harm the JCPOA but to save the accord by creating a balance in the commitments.
