TEHRAN (Press Shia) – President of Iran Hassan Rouhani warned of the US government’s plan to drive a wedge between the Iranian people and administration and to isolate the Islamic Republic, calling for a high turnout in the upcoming parliamentary election to strengthen the public trust.
Speaking at a meeting of the Iranian provincial governors in Tehran on Monday, Rouhani lashed out at his American counterpart for his efforts to misrepresent Iran as an isolated island in the world.
The administration of US President Donald Trump scrapped the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), assassinated popular Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, and is now seeking to destroy the Iranian people’s welfare and disrupt the country’s unity, he deplored.
“They (the US) want to build a permanent wall around Iran, but we should not let it happen. They want to separate us from the world,” Rouhani said.
He called for concerted action by Iranians when it comes to the national interests, saying the “terrorists at the White House” should not be allowed to ruin Iran’s relations with banks in the world or damage the public trust in the government.
“No doubt elections are very important, particularly the parliamentary election is highly significant, but what is more important than the election is the public trust and the social asset,” the president underlined.
Iran is going to hold the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections on February 21.
There are currently 290 seats in the Iranian parliament, known as Majlis, elected by direct vote of people in nationwide election for four years.
