TEHRAN, Jan. 29 (Press Shia) – Foreign Minister Zarif said the policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran aims at establishing stability and peace in Afghanistan and supporting United Nations programs in this regard.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held talks with Tadamichi Yamamoto, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Afghanistan and Head of UNAMA, in Tehran in Sunday afternoon.

During the meeting, Zarif voiced Iran’s readiness to have closer cooperation with the UN and its other agencies in all areas related to Afghanistan.

Zarif went on to express Iran’s full support for the national unity government of Afghanistan, highlighting the Islamic Republic’s policy on establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan and supporting all of UN initiatives in this regard.

Yamamoto, for his part, lauded Iran for its constructive measures in regard to Afghanistan and strong support to the national unity government, adding “the security situation in Afghanistan has worsened following the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country, and despite the government’s efforts to establish peace in the past one and a half years, the number of civilian casualties in the country is still high.”

He further called for the continuation of Iran’s constructive role in restoring peace and stability to Afghanistan.
