TEHRAN (Press Shia) – Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said he had a “very fruitful” meeting with his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Amir Hatami and discussed ways to bolster bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional security issues.
In a tweet on Sunday, Singh posted pictures of his meeting with Hatami in Tehran, saying the two sides had also discussed the situation in Afghanistan.
“Had a very fruitful meeting with Iranian defence minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami in Tehran. We discussed regional security issues including Afghanistan and the issues of bilateral cooperation,” he said in the tweet.
Rajnath reached Tehran from Moscow on Saturday on a transit halt after concluding his three-day visit to Russia.
“The meeting between the two ministers took place in a cordial and warm atmosphere,” Rajnath’s office said in a tweet on the meeting, the Tribune reported.
It was the first visit to Iran by a ranking Indian official after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
In April 2017, Iran’s then defense minister, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, highlighted the far-reaching impacts of military and defense cooperation with India on regional security, stressing that Tehran and New Delhi could work together at a strategic level.
In 2018, India’s Navy Commander Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba visited Tehran to voice his country’s readiness for programs to boost naval cooperation with Iran, such as the exchange of military delegations.
