LONDON, Feb. 28 (Press Shia) – The British government plans to call a halt to free movement of Europeans in the United Kingdom, when it activates the process for its exit from the European Union (EU), or Brexit, a parliamentarian stated.
According to the statements by British Conservative Party Politician Iain Duncan Smith, released on Monday by the Daily Telegraph journal, such decision will be announced in March 15, possible date on which Prime Minister Theresa May will cite Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon so as to start off negotiations with the EU on separation.
Iain Duncan Smith stated that curbing free movement means that EU citizens traveling to the United Kingdom after the corresponding date will not automatically have the right to live permanently in the country.
The politician claimed that the United Kingdom will regain in that way the control of the borders and, as stated by him, the Government will be taking action against some 3.6 million citizens already living in this nation.
Those Europeans arriving in the UK after the official talks on the Brexit will be subject to regulations including a new visa regime and restricting access to state subsidies, the source adds.
Such migration decisions could lead to a serious conflict with the EU, since its leaders consider that the limitation of free movement to European citizens can only be applied about 24 months after the debates on Brexit.
