TEHRAN, Mar. 08 (Press Shia Agency) – Commander of Iran’s Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has said Iran enjoys six geopolitical marine crossings in the region.
Army Navy general received a high-ranking delegation of Pakistan Marine Academy (PMA) on Wednesday. Mr. Sayyari believed Iran and Pakistan were located in a strategic part of the Indian Ocean where strategic waters hosted crossings crucial to the security of energy and trade worldwide; “5 important crossings are in the vicinity of Pakistan; both country are located in an important energy circle, which gives them strategic weight,” he told the meeting.
Sayyari also commented on the possible threats to the security of waters; “sea piracy infests the northern Indian Ocean waters where a third of world trade crosses; Bab el-Mandab and Somalian coastal waters are their abode; Iran and Pakistan should cooperate in addressing issues in terms of economy, politics, security and defense of the waters,” he suggested.
He also believed that to provide the security of the region, “a strong national army which would protect trade in waters is required; Iran and Pakistan will hold next round of mutual visits to ports of both countries planned for the future, to share the capabilities in meeting threats posed by the foreign forces in regional waters,” he concluded.
